NFRS Quarantine Guidelines

Issued 29th March 2025

Anyone who suspects that they have an infectious disease should not enter a show. If they choose to attend without rats, they should shower and wear fresh clothes immediately beforehand. It is recommended to not attend multiple shows in quick succession to prevent the transmission of infection.

Symptoms of infectious diseases may include: respiratory disease other than mild sneezing in several rats; unexplained deaths or illness; gastrointestinal symptoms; and litter loss in two or more does over a short period of time.

Suggested quarantine timeframes are as follows:

  1. For respiratory disease in several rats, quarantine for 8 weeks after the last infection.
  2. For Parvovirus, quarantine for at least 6 months or until you are having successful litters again. PCR and serology testing are available. The reliability of PCR testing can be improved by testing no more than 5 samples at once from rats within the same group. Some labs offer re-testing for an additional fee.

If you have any concerns, please contact the committee.
